TYPE O NEGATIVE - "Havin' a word"

Interview with Peter Steele by Robyn Doreian [Metal Hammer]

Have you ever been slapped with a paternity suit?
"Not yet, thank god!"
Do you live in fear of one?
"Being that I had a vasectomy four years ago, it would be very unlikely."
Has there been a sexual drought since coming off tour?
"I still have my left hand!"
Surely there has been a decline in the variety on offer...
"Brooklyn is a very big place..."
Who is the most famous woman to come on to you? Has Madonna ever called you up?
"I don't think she knows I exist actually, but I did meet Julia Roberts one time. I bumped into her at a restaurant in Manhattan when I was there meeting some people from the Type O Negative organization, and asked to be introduced to her. She had mentioned something about me being so tall and then mentioned to the woman she was with about the size of my hands. I told her that I would like to speak to her later, but I had to leave, and never saw her again."
Did you get anything on Valentines Day?
"Not really, because Valentines Day is also the anniversary of my father's death so I pretty much ignore it."
Do you have a cellar of fine wines at your residence
"No, but I have a liquor store two blocks away from where I live. I did bring some bottles of red wine back with me from France, but they didn't even last the plane ride home."
Would you serve hedgehog food as an entrée at your next dinner party?
(laughs)"No, I think one spoonful of that was quite enough."
With nearly your entire band married off, don't you think it's about time you made an honest woman out of someone?
(laughs) "Well unless I can be with the woman I love all the time, I don't want to get married yet. I would want to have a home together and have a life together, so it will have to wait until this rock 'n' roll stuff calms down a bit."
You have remarked that you find woman who smoke attractive. What is one habit you find most unattractive?
"In both sexes I would say people who chew with their mouth open. With woman in particular, I don't like being around people who are strung out on drugs, so I would say excessive drug use."
When was the last time you punched someone out?
"It was about a year ago when we were on tour in the States. I was standing outside our tour bus and this guy tried to walk on uninvited, and when I pulled him downstairs he shoved me and that was the last thing he did. I think I broke his nose."
What is the most unusual place you've had a blowjob?
"Probably in the boiler room of a club we played upstate New York."
Is it true that Dino Cazares has a video of you getting a blow job?
"I don't think so. I think it was some girl tying me shoe for me."
When was the last time you were in an art gallery?
"That would have been last September when I went to the Museum of Modern Art to see an exhibition of Soviet poser art."
What is one job you hate doing around the house?
"I hate taking the garbage out. We have to recycle here so there are like four different trash containers and they have to be bagged with different colored bags. It's just a hassle."
What is the weirdest letter you've had from a fan?
"There was a couple who wanted me to sing at their wedding. They didn't have a particular song in mind, but said it would be an honor if I attended. There was also a plane ticket on offer to take me to Seattle, but I would have been too embarrassed to do that."
If you were to write an autobiography of your life, what would the title be?
"'White Dope On Punk', because I think I am a white dope, meaning not so much of a bright guy or maybe a social retard, and I guess there are punk elements to the music I have written."
What would the first line be?
"I was so ugly when I was born that when the placenta came out after I did, the doctor said to my mother - twins!"
Are you still working out?
"Yes I am. Not so much to get bigger, just to fend off old age. If I feel good about myself and I feel good physically, continuing to use my heart and lungs, maybe they won't ago so rapidly. I'm not worried about getting older, I'm just trying to live for the moment. When I'm on my deathbed I don't want to look back and say, maybe if I had exercised every day I wouldn't be here right now."
How near are you to your goal of financial independence?
"Not near at all. I hope this album is very successful and I don't have to worry about checks coming in or paying back money to the record company. I also think there is a distinct possibility that if this album doesn't do very well, there may not be one after that."
